Extended Reality used in the Hospitality and Marketing Industry

By:Kyle Doroja, Heniskumar Patel and Gurkirat Singh

What is Extended Reality ?

Extended Reality (XR) is a new form of medium that has rose in popularity lately and it refers to all real and virtual combined environments. It can be representative in different forms such as augmented reality (AR), augmented virutuality (AV) and virtual reality (VR).The levels of virtuality range from partially sensory inputs to immersive virtuality. Still, its purpose and use lies in the extension of human experiences especially relating to the senses of existence (represented by VR) and the acquisition of cognition (represented by AR).

Virtual Reality (VR) takes the user into a virtual environment typically used with a head set for viewing and sometimes with a controller as well to navigate though the virtual space, while Augmented Reality (AR) overlays the real environment with digital objects, allowing the user to experience the relationship between digital and physical world.

The three main examples of Extended Reality

How are hotels implementing Extended Reality Technology in their business ?

Hotels as of late are now using extended reality with their marketing to provide a more immersed experience when showing customers available rooms, banquet halls and their recreation facilities just to name a few. The big one that is currently using a form of XR for their promotion is the famous hotel and resort Shangri-La in which they have a page focused on their website that promotes all their chain hotels all around the world and with a simple click you can become fully immersed at all these beautiful locations as if you were there to get a feel on what to expect if you book with Shangri-La.

Given it's vast use of unlimited possibility on marketing many hotel chains now such as the Mariott, Hilton, Best Western, Premier inn and the Mansion are hopping board on the extended reality train and are using it in ways that allow their guest to have a more easier time when their travelling to destinations unknown while also providing a unique exciting experience.

Using AR as a form of travel assist

How will this impact the hospitality marketing industry ?

Guest of today mostly crave two things with their travel which is convenience and innovation and given how technology continues to grow and evolve more and more with the use of this implemented technology it allows hotels and businesses to adjust to the change of target audience.

Given that the dominant generation for consumers as of late are the millennial's the generation which relies on technology heavily. It means that they're most likely to purchase a product that has technology involved with their experience compared to that with a package that doesn't. It allows the hotel companies to provide to their guest a new innovative way of making their travel experience much more unique by allowing infinite possibilities on making their customers satisfied and more willing to come back to their establishment, Extended Reality also has the ability to transform how guest interact with the hotel both on and off site which allows guest to still have a form of assistance and independence while on their travels.

Other ways that the hospitality business use extended reality is with their previews and bookings, interactive entertainment, immediate translation for those in countries foreign to them and finally finding your way to provide easier navigation .

With Augmented Reality hotels are able to provide real time navigation for consumers if they are in need of assistance and have no guide. AR can also provide simulated travel experiences allowing any consumer to experience certain recreational activities without the worry of safety or concern.

Overall, we believe that Extended Reality has the ability to "augment" the hospitality industry in a huge way if this trend becomes the norm for marketing and that it can be a huge step forward for any company that hops on board with this concept.

    1. hi, I agree that it can be the future of hospitality industry But i don't think 8 out of 10 people using it right now because only few of the hotels are using this technology and some of their are not even aware of this technology So it will take time be in market as a marketing tool. And for sure once it will come in market it will make people to use and people will love it.

  2. Hi!My name is Minhui Gan,300979374. I agree with you. XR is one of the trends in the hospitality industry. Once, when I booked a hotel, one of the hotels used the VR function, which gave me a clearer understanding of the environment inside the hotel. When I arrived at the hotel, it was exactly the same as what I saw in VR. In general, it is difficult for us to judge the hotel environment through a photo, or the hotel will avoid showing some bad details. So sometimes we will be disappointed when we arrive at the hotel. I think this way is very

  3. Hey! I do think that XR is currently taking the travel industry by storm. It allows people to see things in a different way that is very unique and creative. So, if I were looking for hotels to stay at then I would more likely choose one that had an VR feature. It makes the company stand out more and peaks my interest. I mean, if they have a cool VR component to them then what else might they have up their sleeve?

  4. Hey! I agree that XR is a big trend in the travel and hospitality industry. Personally I think that this is very cool. This because when you go out and you are planning to stay at a hotel or an upscale place then if it has this feature it will make it that more fun! I would say that there is a lot more individuals these days that are looking for something new and exciting. I think this feature will add that much more excitement and I think that it will attract many more people. Since it is more new, most people haven't had a chance to try it in full force and by having this in various future hotels then it will give them the chance to experience it themselves.

    1. yes, it is cool, new,it will make more fun for people, exciting and attracting but to being in hospitality industry i think that, to meet up the expectations of guest is the foremost goal for every organisation irrespective of its size and this is a great achievement in hospitality and travel industry. If any hotel is using this technology then undoubtedly they are showcasing good service and a lot more than their competitor. Its elevates customers expectations. Thus hotels have to strive more to build up a hardworking setup as well as have to pull up theirs socks to upgrade minor changes evolving.Otherwise it might create a disaster and also effect the goodwill if it fails to live up to customers standards as there are lured with advert. In a nutshell the worst disgrace for any hotels is if they fail to achieve their purposed targets and might end up in losing their valuable customers.

  5. Hey! Great blog! I do think that the use of extended reality can be the future of marketing for the hospitality industry. I think it's really incredible how much technology has grown lately, and how beneficial it has been, and will continue to be as it continues to develop. The use of extended reality creates a great opportunity for future guests to have a better connection with the hotel/resort before arriving. It helps diminish that 'unknown' feeling most people are uncomfortable with, which will only continue to benefit the hotel industry.

Hey, this is a great topic to say for the one who has already worked in Marketing industry like me. This technology could be the good way to customers and clients get to experience your product or service as it is meant to be used. Augmented reality (AR) marketing takes the reins from virtual reality platforms to create a new, interactive consumer experience. Thanks for giving an interesting topic for us.

  8. Hi, regarding the first question, I believe that evolution in technology is of great importance in every aspect of our daily life, I am from times where virtual technology was fiction, and people used to think it was going to take place in books and movies only but that was just the beginning, technology is part of everything nowadays and virtual tech is in my personal opinion having their first baby steps and companies supporting them are pioneers of greater things for future generations. Nevertheless, I can't say it will substitute traditional marketing but I think it will be a very important part of it.
